Forum: etree Subject: I'd like to start collecting/trading

Here's my tale:

I discovered etree.org last spring through Phil's (Lesh) website. However I did not have high speed access. Now I do. Three days ago a friend told me about archive.org and I was getting ready to download over the holiday my first show ever attended (July 31, 1974 Dillion Stadium) when this happened.

I don't know but I been told if the horse won't pull then you got to carry the load...

Here's the load I can carry. I have a sony cd burner. If anyone is willing to share their shows with me I can help with burning for your requests from others. To begin I'm looking for the July 31, 1974 Dillion Stadium show for sentimental reasons (the version with the opening scarlet), and High Gate Vermont 1995 for my wife who was there and fondly remembers it.

If this request is out of line let me know, I just joined and while I did read the terms of use I am not skillied in this stuff.

Oh well, never could reach it, it just slips away but I try... kalca@localnet.com

I know Deadheads will have an increased interest in trading based on the changes here. However, this is not a trading forum and as with the ISOs we discussed recently, further threads and trading posts may be pruned from this messageboard. Sorry.

However, there is a perfectly wonderful area to conduct lossless audio trades: etree.org, the place that helped start the Live Music Archive here. There are forums at http://forums.etree.org, forums at http://db.etree.org (as well as a gigantic database of traders) and a downloading hub at http://bt.etree.org, just for starters. There are even a few old (disused) mailing lists.

You'll get a welcome at etree.org! BTW I help over there too, although it's a separate project. I vouch for its coolness. ;)

Diana's right. The sister site is a good alternative. Helpful and informative forums that are conduisive to the info shared on this site. I only ask that you and your fellow moderators can be a little extra tolerant of the ISO's, while understandably this is not THE place for such, until we all get weened off our addiction to this site for the Dead. Why don't you Diana and all the other good folks of IA, LMA and etree go home or elsewhere for some turkey and/or a double scotch/large glass of wine, etc.,as you have all had one hellacious week. Thanks for tolerating some of the unnecessary meanness that this weeks changes have produced in what I hope are otherwise rational and loving Heads. We have (myself included) become addicted to the drug of 2900 great downloads and being deprived of our drug for now has its effects. Its like you have a couple hundred new non smokers on your hands who have been told to quit cold -turkey (no Thanksgiving pun intended)! Good luck, thanks for all your collective efforts and have a happy holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving Jody, thanks for the kind words! My turkey's in the oven right now and the wine's chilling. :)

Understood about the trade posts but don't want it to become a swamping tide of them in coming days- so feel free to point people to better resources when you see a thread kicking up. Thanks again!

Shall do. Enjoy the bird and wine (although not necessarily in that order!)

I can completely relate. I didn't find this archive until about ten days ago, and not thinking it would be going anywhere, I was only grabbing a show or two a day; just what I was able to listen to in that day. I'm really disappointed, bummed, and frustrated.

Good point, Diana. Here are a few good starting points I was emailing some friends yesterday for trading resources.

1. Usenet - subscribe to a good news server and start downloading from alt.binaries.gdead.*. Buzzardnews and Giganews are good servers, I use Grabit as a client. Best likelihood of completing your download and quickly. Anyone who needs help with this let me know, it's pretty easy to learn.

2. Furthernet - tons for offer using this P2P program. Lots of RAM, often slow, but I've sometimes downloaded shows impossible to find elsewhere.

3. Bittorrent - bt.etree.org has lots of Dead for download. Usually better than Furthernet, especially if a lot of people are downloading at the same time. I use Azureus as a client. Make sure to follow the directions on how to configure your firewall.

4. etree - trade shows with others via s-mail using db.etree.org, start posting your own list to increase your chances of someone wanting to trade.

5. GDLive - back to the old standby. Many very nice SBDs there.

From '84-'91 I built a collection of hundreds of tapes trading through Relix magazine and via email on the nascent internet. Even without Archive, we are still spoiled rotten, folks.

Hi laptaper,

Thank you for your great post here on all our possibilities now that the Archive has lost the Grateful Dead and your willingness to help us technically challenged out. I also want to thank everyone at LMA for all they have done for us over the last couple of days, during a holiday as well. You are all truly amazing people. Sorry I digress.

Laptaper, I am very clueless about the whole P2P, Bittorrent thing and think I’ve got myself blocked from the bt.etree.org site. When you find the time, could you contact me so that I may ask you a few questions about all of it? I would really appreciate it. I look forward to hearing from you.

etree.org's host, ibiblio, went down unexpectedly and apparently they're still working on it. Darn!
